Thullal

'Thullal' simply means 'Dance'

Thullal

This art form reveals a temperament full of humor and social awareness. The art of 'Thullal' evolved as a distinct form by a harmonious blend of some of the classical and folk forms of art so that it "represented the accumulated aesthetic experience of all sections of the people, high and low". Stories are drawn from the never-failing epics and "puranas" of India. "Ottam-Thullal"(the most famous thullal) is a popular form of entertainment consisting of a mono-act in simple make-up, dance abhinaya, a few mudras, and music recitations with a few accompaniments like mridangam, kuzhittaalam (musical instruments) etc.

  Performing Thullal

There are plenty of frank and witty critical remarks on men and events of topical interest, the pervading sense of humour and sarcasm makes the whole performance very enjoyable. "Ottam thullal" performances do not last more than 2 to 3 hours. This may be another reason for its popularity. Propagation of knowledge and of religious and philosophical truths, and correction of social and political evils were all achieved through songs, dance and abhinaya.
