Thrissur,
situated just north of Kochi is considered to be the
cultural capital of Kerala. Rich in history, cultural
heritage and archeological wealth, this festival district has witnessed many rulers and dynasties
starting with the Zamorins, Tipu Sultan to the Dutch and the British.
The state derives its name from the word 'thr-siva–perur',
means "the town of Lord Shiva". In fact, the city of Thrissur is built around the Shiva Temple, Vadakunathan
Kshethram. It is one of the largest and most famous temples in Kerala. Every
year in March Thrissur is the scene of the extravagantly colourful
Pooram festival. |

Get involved in this project and let’s show the world
what Kerala’s all about!
Kerala is such a vast and diverse place that it is
impossible to fit everything about it onto a website!
Do you have an extra little something to add to make
our site even more informative, colorful and vibrant?
Or do you have a special little tit-bit or story about
the place you grew up in?
