In the month of Sravan, after the coming of the rains, girls put up swings
on trees near their homes. One sits on the swing and another pushes it. The
girl on the swing tries to raise it higher and higher and higher, singing
a song all the while.
This was quite popular among all the women in my family -
my sister, cousins, mother, aunts and even my grandmother
have had a go at it sometime or the other.
Sometimes one of the older girls would put a young one on her lap while she swings
higher and higher, holding the frightened baby fast to her waist.
The one who could swing the highest was the winner.
