The district of Malappuram, which literally means a
terraced place atop hills, was carved out of the
districts of Kozhikode (or Calicut) and Palakkad (or
Palghat) in 1969. Malappuram figures prominently
in history as the place which frequently questioned
British authority. Some of Kerala's greatest poets,
writers, political and religious leaders hail from this
region. Malappuram is also famous for it's Ayurvedic
research centers and hospitals. The most famous of these
is the 'Arya Vaidya Sala' at Kottakkal, 12 km southwest
of Malappuram City. The foundation grows a wide range of
herbs and spices which go into the production of
Ayurvedic Medicines. |
