Kollam district, popularly known as Quilon, is situated just north of Thiruvananthapuram. During ancient times, Kollam was a renowned international trade center, frequented by Phoenicians, Persians, Romans, Arabs and Chinese. Famous travelers like Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta have acclaimed the historical importance of Kollam. Today, Kollam is one of the major industrial and commercial centers of Kerala - and the southern gateway to the famous backwaters of Kerala!
