Tucked away between Pathanamthitta in the south,
Kottayam in the west, Thrissur in the north and the
state of Tamil Nadu in the east is the district of
Idukki. This district's name is supposed to be derived
from the Malayalam word `idukku', which means a narrow
gorge. Narrow, steep-sided valleys are commonly found in
this district. With high ranges of altitudes varying
from 2500 feet to over 5000 feet above sea level, Idukki
is the district where forests and wildlife abound. These
forests are home to a variety of flora and fauna. They
are also a source of teak, rosewood, and sandalwood.
Streams, valleys, and hills combine to make Idukki
district an ideal year-round holiday destination. |

Kerala is such a vast and diverse place that it is
impossible to fit everything about it onto a website!
Do you have an extra little something to add to make
our site even more informative, colorful and vibrant?
Or do you have a special little tit-bit or story about
the place you grew up in?
