ï The uncrowned king of the jungle and one of the gentlest beasts of the wild - The Asian elephants. Herds of elephants roam free in the jungles of Thekkady (Idukki) and Muthenga  (Wayanad). Known for their loyalty and dedication, these animals are loved and revered throughout Kerala.

 Elephants  naturally develop family and social groups that support, nurture and protect their "children" too.ð

ï From Jungles to Where Human live,Its been hard days to these sensitive lovable jumbos.Elephants have few natural enemies, their greatest is man. In times past man has abused the elephant, killing it for its tusks or simply for sport or subduing it into service in their armies.

 

"We are the caretakers" say the humans.   ð

ï Along jungle trails where motors fear to tread, a mighty bull elephant works, hauling and logging giant trees for the timber merchants. ð

ï Guruvayoor Kesavan, The KIng Of Elephants' who served the presiding deity of Guruvayoor temple for several decades.Kerala must be the only place where a statue has been erected in the memory of(Kesavan) an elephant.

 

Elephant and Kerala are indivisibly related. Here domesticated animals have a better way of living  than any other place in the world ð

Festival time...elephants play an important role in many temple festivals.

ï A mahout feeds his beautifully caparisoned elephant as they wait for celebrations to start.

Caparisoned elephants stand in formation with their mahouts beside them...an awesome spectacle of beauty and power.  ð

ï When elephants and humans mix...The Elephants love it.

'Boy, that feels gooood'...an elephant getting his daily bath. Mahouts or Elephant keepers are elephants Close friends, An every day bath Is essential as to keep the Elephants happy and fresh. ð

Self service... Its a wonder since Keralites treat elephants as domestic animal and give them human names. ð
