ï Koodiyattam is the world's oldest form of theatre. Performed in Sanskrit by both men and women it is staged in a special temple theatre called Koothambalam. The accompaniment is chiefly by the use of mizhavu drums played by the Nambiars who sit at the rear of the stage. These huge copper drums  set the mood for the play and heighten its drama. They also keep the talam, the rhythmic pattern.  ð
