The Value of Friendship

A very rare and unexpected friendship blossoms within the confines of the Annakotta. The bond is viewed with envy and many times the senior citizens of the Annakotta warned them; since they were the youngest of the female lot, all the males kept an eye on them. They seemed to be inseparable and even their 'pappans' (mahouts) are inseparable friends (Mr. Johnny and Mr. Sagar).

Umadevi celebrated her 25th birthday this July and she had no record of unruly behavior during her stay in the elephant paradise of South India for the past 21 odd years; it was a pompous celebration for Johnny too as he was turning 50 years of age. There was special 'puja' (prayer) held in the Annakotta and that was a night to remember. John was totally drunk that night and so was Umadevi ! It was the first time that she was given a fermented drink which caused, she remembers, a lot of extra ordinary outrageous behavior.

The next day all her mates told her of her unruly behavior and that she broke her chains twice before retiring to sleep. The only person to support her was Nandini who was her good friend - of course what are friends for!

Nandini, aged 24, is a very tall female elephant. She was very fond of Umadevi who was her only consoling companion when she was dragged from the jungle floors to this confinement for reasons she still does not understand today. That was a decade ago when there was heavy poaching in the jungles of northeast India.

She was very home sick and she couldn’t believe the way that men treated elephants, especially in a place like Kerala where there is a respectful moratorium to elephants and their habitation. Today she is 7 feet and weighs 5 tones and these statistics are considered to be very good according to her mahout [Sagar].

"Hi I am Umadevi... I am only 25"

These two are the best example of how far good friendship can go because usually female elephants are jealous of each other and don’t get along well as in the case of Devi and Tara. Although they are good friends they don’t allow any one else into their close circle of friendship, as they don’t trust any of them. The others all have selfish motives and are greedy; especially when it comes to behaving properly when there are visitors. The one good thing that Nandini and Umadevi like is that they can communicate their voices without being heard by the mahouts or visitors - thank goodness that the ‘creator’ spared such a virtue or else could human beings stand all these?
