Mini Skirts, Hot Pants, Tank tops, Knee high
boots.....etc.....if you were hoping to see these in Kerala...a
word of advice...Dream on !!! We know that in the western world
these items of clothing are considered very cool and sexy. But
if you wore one of these in Kerala, you would be considered a
slut ! Now don't misinterpret this attitude to mean that
Keralites are overly strict in their dress code. You are pretty
much allowed to wear what you want as long as its decent and
doesn't show too much skin. To better understand it, think of it
like this...the dress code is not as strict as in the middle
eastern countries but at the same time it is not as liberal as
in the western countries.
The
people in Kerala wear mostly cotton outfits as it best suits the
climate. But now a days, synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester
etc are very popular as they are light and easy to maintain. The
most popular outfit among the young ladies here is the 'salwar
kameez', the older ladies prefer the 'sari'. Whereas, among the
young men the most popular outfit is the jeans/pants -
t-shirts/shirt combo, and the shirt and 'mundu' ensemble is the hot favourite among the older men.
