(A yogurt based gravy which goes very well with steamed rice)
 

To make 'Kalan' you will need.....

Ingredients

Quantities

raw banana

400 gms

chili powder

10 gms

turmeric

1 gm

coconut

200 gm

pepper corns (optional)

16 nos

cumin

1 gm

curds

225 gms

curry leaves

3 sprigs

salt

to taste

oil

30 ml

fenugreek

1 gm

mustard seeds

1 gm

broken red chilies

1 no

curry leaves

1 sprig.

Boil, peel and cut bananas into roundels.

Mix together bananas,  chili powder, half the turmeric, part of the salt and enough water to cook bananas fairly dry.

Grind together to a very fine paste, coconut, pepper corns, rest of turmeric and cumin.

When bananas are cooked, add ground ingredients, well beaten curd and more salt.

Simmer, stirring occasionally till the mixture becomes quite thick (10 -15 minutes). Remove from fire.

Heat oil, add fenugreek, mustard seeds and broken red .chilies When seeds crackle, add curry leaves and temper the dish.
