( A spicy delight)
A thick curry with lots of spice, though a favourite among the Malayali's, this dish is hard to find because of the time taken for preparation
 

To prepare this spicy delight you will need....

Ingredients

Quantities

Large onions

2 (sliced fine)

Garlic cloves

2

Grated coconut

1 cup

Shallots

1 cu

Fenugreek seeds

1 tsp

Chili powder

1 tbsp

Jack fruit seed

100 gm (cut into 4)

Thuar dal (Yellow dal)

1/3cup

Coriander seeds

1 tsp

Green Chilly (slit)

3

Salt

to taste

Oil

4 tsp

Tamarind extract

1 tbsp

Turmeric powder

1 tsp

Curry leaves

  1.  

1. Heat 2 tsp of the oil in a frying pan and add ˝ cup of the chopped onions.
2. Sauté well till brown add the curry leaves, coriander seeds and fenugreek seeds.
3. Stir for a few more minutes and remove and keep aside.
4. On a low heat, dry roast the coconut till brown.
5. Blend the coconut with the onion mixture adding half a cup of water.
6. Cook the dal, jack fruit seed in pressure cooker with water.
7. Heat the remaining oil in a saucepan and add the mustard seeds.
8. When they splutter, add the curry leaves and remaining onions and shallots and fry till brown.
9. Add the tamarind extract and ˝ cup water and salt.
10.When it starts to boil, add the blended paste, dal and cook on a low flame for 15 minutes.

Theeyal is a spicy vegetable curry which goes very well with rice, this is a common dish and much preferred by the Hindus. Theeyal is one of the most important accompaniment in sadhya.
