A crossroad that has morphed through time

There is no surety what could happen to this otherwise calm junction in Kallely thottam [thotam, a Malayalam word for estate], which bears the brunt of clashes as well as the joy during a corresponding celebration in the area. This junction has been in existence ever since the time the estate was managed by the British appointed managers [120 years ago] and was known in those times for tea cultivation. However the drastic deforestation has lead to variable climate change and the estate now is known for its rubber plantation.

In times gone by this was just a mud track and only jeeps and lorries used to ply on this route. Gradually as the estate fell in the hands of Mr. R.P.Goenka [now Harrison's Malayalam Estate], the infrastructure gradually improved. Only 5 % of the people living at present in the area are natives, the rest have migrated as part of being employed in the estate from Tamil Nadu and the Malabar Coast.

This was also the known route to the Achenkovil temple [one of the sites where Lord Ayyapan worshiped his father Lord Shiva] which is a famous pilgrimage site for thousands, and this junction is the last point for these pilgrims on foot to refresh and pack up food and drinking water. Today this junction has been electrified, has a telephone booth and a tarred road. Of course generations have passed and although incidents of suicide, rape, and murders had occurred. This continues to happen today -  more so because political unions have divided people in the area beyond recognition of each other for attracting fame and wealth.

A crossroad that has morphed through time

The recent trends of unnatural deaths have revealed that pre-marital affairs have caught up as a way of living, especially among adults, who waste a lot of effort in pursuing such unproductive exercises. Fashion trends catch up very late in this place and an urban visitor dressed in casuals is always looked upon with suspicion and jealousy. The people are reserved in behavior and are very difficult to communicate, as they feel insecure in relating with strangers, so the best way to make friends is to have a contact in this naive hamlet. The genetic make-up of the people enables them to have a passion to idle away their time, to gossip, enact talking and behavior as in movies they watch.

The people take very less risks in terms of investment than  in speculative trading. They are unwise to invest in insecure private banks [called blades], as they get thrice the interest on investment than in public banks.
All types of seafood and meat products are highly consumed. Alcoholism and smoking also go hand in hand. People are canny when it comes to making fast money and there have been numerous instances of pilferage of valuable wood from the estate and the forest [Neduvathumuzhy forest range]. Here both the police and the thugs are known to be hands in gloves. Resistances to these antisocial acts are exhibited by Non Governmental Organizations, but to no known success. Although the government introduces subsidies and new schemes these policies when passed down to the village authorities, are tampered. Particularly the funds and hence the real development never reaches the people in a 100% manner. The social scientists have attributed the rebellious nature of the people to such discrepancies on part of the elected government and due to this they also indulge in corruption to accomplish their matters of interest.

The people are very much attached to entertainment and when shooting/making of films or TV soaps take place, there is always a crowd of the hamlet representatives who wonder at the technology with which cinema is made. Every household has a TV and locals  are late sleepers at night. But at the same time they wake up early to continue their everyday nuisances, as usual.
