It wasn't long before the wealth of spices from Kerala attracted the attention of the European powers. Rulers financed expeditions and soon ships set sail to find the sea route to Kerala. It was a race between the major powers, the prize being unlimited access to spices and a chance to monopolize the spice trade. Eventually, 3 European powers managed to establish themselves in Kerala - the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English.
