Categories of Ayurvedic Medicine today

Avaleha and Pak - Obtained from repeated boiling the drug extract and condensing with sugar.

Bati - Pulverised plant drugs added with honey made into pills/tablet form and dried in sun/heat.

Bhasma -
Powder form of a substance obtained from calcination;18 stages of testing are done in its manufacture.


Churna
- Rough powder made by combination of other prepared drugs.

Medicated Ghrita
- Preparations where ghee is boiled with other drugs. Ordinary Ghrita's are without the addition of ghee.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Guggulu - An important ingredient from the plant 'Commiphore  mukul' that is exudated.

Kupipakwa Rasayan - Fluid preparation combining Shuddha Parad, Gandhak and other prescribed drugs. When matured it is used in combination with other drugs against very chronic diseases.

Lauh-Mandoor - Preparation containing 'mandoor' along with other drugs.

Parpati
- Prepared as per prescription using purified Mercury with Sulphur subject to heat as per prescription.

Pishti
- Ingredients grinded in pestle and mortar made of Muguuni stone along with rose water for 8/14 or 21 days, and either drying them in sun during daytime (Suryaputit) or under moonlight at night (Chandraputit) .

Ras-Rasayan
- Preparation with Ras Yogas, Mercury, Sulphur, Vat Sanabha, Hingul, Tankan, Alum, Kuchila, Opium, Dhatura, Siddhi and Jaypal all in tablet form.

Medicated oil
- Oils boiled with prescribed drugs prepared for external application on the body.

Pravahi Kwath
- Combination of prescribed drugs made into rough powder (JAVKUT) form and used in preparation of Kasaya (fluid medicine)

Ark
- Liquid preparation obtained by distillation of certain liquids/drugs soaked/mixed in water .

Shodhit Dravya and Satva
- Satva is a water extractable solid collected from a drug. This is then dried and powdered.

Asava-Arishta
- Crude drug to which water is added along with molasses, honey and astringents like Dhatakipushp, Babbul etc. kept mixed for a certain period for fermentation. Asana-Arishta with high potency are clear liquids and maturity increases its strength.
